PRESERVING LIFE

The verb to preserve comes from Latin praeservare.

Prae – before

Servare – to serve, to guard.

As a fundamental principle, to serve or to guard something you need to know it.  You cannot protect and preserve something you do not know.

You cannot love something that is not close to you and present in your everyday life.

You can abstract an image and even make it part of your cognitive acquis, but this information drifts apart from knowledge and is definitely not experience.

How can human beings, who grew away from nature, from its magnificence, freshness, calmness, wisdom, love and ecstasy, be able to comprehend the importance of protecting and preserving it?

How people, who were raised in front of blackboards, screens and brick walls, will be able to take action in their everyday life to preserve and protect nature?

They see rain forests, oceans, rivers, mountains and landscapes through television and computer screens, nothing more, and their quotidian life is made of concrete, pollution, walls, processed food and synthetic material, mostly plastic.

They get moved from what they see through their SCREEN GOD, but whatever is located eyes up to the front in your body turns out to be a lot of blah, blah, blah instead of actions.

It would be perfect if we could only change the channel as Peter Seller’s character used to do in Being There.

But, it is not like this.

Actually, ACTION COMES FROM THE HEART.
The intellect, in general, refrains spontaneous action. It weights fears, risks, possibilities and gets energetically drained by them.

The brave is not lost in thoughts and considerations.
The brave ACTS, and takes everyday measures to protect and preserve what is dear to HIS HEART.

I became an ecologist long before I had ever heard the word. At first I thought I was fighting to save rubber trees, then I thought I was fighting to save the Amazon rain forest. Now, I realize I am fighting for humanity.

Basically, I am saying that if we want adults with environmental and ecologic consciousness, we need to EDUCATE THEM THROUGH EXAMPLE AND EXPERIENCE.

We have killed the native populations and destroyed the integral cultures who could offer this knowledge and wisdom to us firsthand. We are still terminating them.

So, now, we have to search for this reconnection by ourselves and we must be the example for the future generations.

Children must have a integrative, holistic education. They must experience in order to know, they must see nature and natural life with their own eyes, they must touch, taste, breathe, feel.

Children are not supposed to be in front of screens or blackboards AND BE TOLD HOW IT WORKS AND WHAT TO DO. This is mental slavery and it is also destroying the planet.

People are not supposed to be imitation monkeys, as we see many nowadays and you don’t need more than a gorilla to tell you what to do.

Children have to discover the universe through their own curiosity and experience, each on one’s own rhythm, pace and preferences, and we, adults, must not interfere, but offer the experiences they ask for during the journey.

Then, our children will be naturally curious, creative, active, intelligent, full of life, centered, integrated and brave human beings.

Then, our children will be wise leaders. To lead you need to know, to experience and to serve, first.

Praeservare – to serve, to guard beforehand.

If we want to achieve better results, since it seems to be a critical issue to keep on inhabiting this planet, we need to change our mindset.

When we are no longer able to change a situation it means we are being challenged to change ourselves.

If we pollute the air, water and soil that keep us alive and well, and destroy the biodiversity that allows natural systems to function, no amount of money will save us.

David Suzuki

THIS IS HOW WE PROTECT LIFE.
BEING LIFE.
